Nothing quite like a day of coding and watching my brand new babylon 5 dvds!

Went to futureshop (yea, i know, first mistake) to grab a new mouse (’cause mine suddenly started to die today) and Children of Dune to complete our dune night next week.

Well, I did find a decent mouse, not the one or kind I wanted, but a good enough one, thier stock was half missing. But when i went looking for the dvd, not only could I find nobody to help me because like half of them were standing in front of a tv watching some game (suspect olympics, didn’t check), and the one i eventually found was pretty rude.

me: Do you have children of dune?
her: I’m not really sure
me: *points at the screen* says you do
her: Its often wrong
her: *as she checks her computer* its more often than wrong

her: Its not even listed at all
me: .. Does that mean its not carried at all? nowhere?
her: its not here and not really at other stores

Okay, not quite rude, but not very helpful.

Next went up to HMV, checked his computer, saw one, looked around, looked some more, checked places, checked his computer again, asked if i wanted him to phone other stores, etc.. Turns out even thier other store (downstairs) couldn’t find the one they had in thier computer either, but they at least tried.

Ended up grabbing the last 2 boxes of futurama. So its not all bad.

Finally got my script that downloads hiscifi (and jevon’s future show if he ever gets a new one) fixed up and running again.

Apparently CJSF updated thier archive pages (kplaylist) so my script had to be totally hacked again. I hate scraping sites, its so.. finicy.. I tried this time to make the script a little more lient, but its getting harder and harder each time to fix things.

I just wish we could get a ftp access or something so i don’t waste thier time parsing the pages and such.

That or there was a (cheap) way for me to just record directy from the radio signal so I don’t have to worry about them breaking thier archives again (or shoutcast).

Okay, Yesterday I finally got php and apache to play nice again and upgraded both installations.

Last time I attempted this I found there was alot of problems. Pages not working, perl + php not playing nice, etc.

I’ve tried out a bunch of the problematic pages this time, and everything seems to be working fine now.

Someone let me know if anything goes wrong.

Finished The Eternity’s End By Jeffrey A. Carver.. I wasn’t impressed to start with, but man it ended up pretty good. Turns out its the last in a series of books, thats why it was so confusing at first. The guy is an awesome reader. I mean he’s no Orsen Scott Card :D

Next up:
* Northern Lights – Philip Pullman

Apparently setting up a gforge setup with true chroot shells and such is alot harder than it looks.
I’ve been quite happy with the patches to openssh for this.. but trying to re-create an environment that is conductive to building projects is that much harder.. I’ve given up right now on copying all the files i might eventually need and focus on looking into distcc.. I’m wondering if i can use that tool to escape the chroot long enough to compile everything and send back the code.
I wish i could just easily search for forums on gforge.org.. I mean its doable, but a pain in the ass.
Its really made me appreciate packaging again. So much so i’m thinking of getting my own 1U server going up at peer 1 or something. Something I have physical access to, can pre-setup and harden on my own before putting it on the net, and not be stuck with redhat EH. I can’t even use the auto updating tools to update it.

Man, been working on trying to setup my webserver cleaner, more importantly get php setup better..

Attempted to do that yesterday, man that sucked, ended up trying to get mod_php, mod_perl and mod_python installed as DSOs, only to find out that none of them seemed to want to work right.

So any bad stuff on servers yesterday should probably just be quietly ignored :) going to have to spend some more time on this trying to figure it out. I think i just compiled PHP badly with conflicting mysql libraries or something…

Scott Adams is an absolute genius.

I love his debating opt-outs for stupid people. My favorite being:

Omit key words. For example, if someone says that people can’t eat rocks, accuse the person of being stupid for suggesting that people can’t eat. Bonus points for arguing that some people CAN eat pebbles if they try hard enough.

And yes, I know i havn’t posted for a while, just been busy with tons of other projects and a new job.

HRM…

i could setup jabber so it would work for any of my mail domains.
set it up so on those domains, people can only login using thier mail logins.

so jevon@hiscifi.com
gavin@kodekoan.com

etc

that’d be pretty cool…
could even make email notification using that.
